About The Finger Lakes
The Finger Lakes are a beautiful scenic region located between New York City and Niagara Falls. According to Indian folklore, the Finger Lakes were formed when God placed His handprint into some of the most beautiful land ever created. There are eleven finger shaped lakes, which are named for the six nations of the Iroquois: Cayugas, Mohawks, Onondagas, Oneidas, Senecas and Turcaroras. Two of the lakes (Seneca and Cayuga) are among the deepest in North America and have bottoms below sea level. These lakes all formed over the last two million years by glacial carving of old stream valleys. The Finger Lakes region is one of the largest wine producing regions in the Eastern United States, with dozens of wineries offering tours and tastings.
What is it about the Finger Lakes that inspires so many to visit or to live in this part of New York? It’s the Finger Lakes lifestyle. Our four seasons are packed with options for outdoor recreation and healthy living. Fresh water lakes and great country roads weave together the small towns. We’re not big and fancy – nor do we want to be. We enjoy the simplicity of getting around. We’re proud of our heritage. From grape festivals to wine tastings – from roadside stands to pick your own –great strolls along Main Street, Fabulous Antique and Art Shows – perhaps it’s the diversity that makes the Finger Lakes lifestyle so special.
